What is Genetic IVF?
Genetic IVF combines the techniques of in-vitro fertilization (IVF) and Preimplantation Genetic Testing (PGT-A) to detect abnormalities in the chromosome number in the embryos. Unlike conventional IVF, genetic IVF has an additional step of screening the genetic composition of embryos before their transfer into the uterus of the intended mother.

Types of Genetic Testing

- PGT- A
Preimplantation Genetic Testing for Aneuploidy (PGT-A) is a genetic test that screens all 23 pairs of human chromosomes for aneuploidy, a missing or extra chromosome. This test generally proves helpful in screening embryos for disorders like Down Syndrome. - PGT-M
Preimplantation Genetic Testing for Monogenic Disorders is a genetic test that screens single-gene diseases or monogenic illnesses. Every chromosome has thousands of genes that are responsible for many functions in our body. Loss or malfunction of a gene will lead to gene-specific disorder.
This testing reduces the chances of the child inheriting certain gene-specific diseases like cystic fibrosis, Huntington’s disease, muscular dystrophy, sickle cell anemia, etc.

Steps of The Genetic IVF Process
We understand how overwhelming the journey of couples struggling with infertility issues is, especially if they are overcome with the fear of having a baby with hereditary disorders.
Hence, at Khushhi IVF, along with the medical diagnosis and infertility treatment, we also cater to the couple’s emotional well-being. We conduct the genetic IVF process to rule out the chances of known family disorders from being inherited by the offspring.
Here’s a brief overview of the Genetic IVF treatment stages.
Ovulation stimulation: Fertility medications are administered to stimulate the woman’s ovaries to produce multiple viable eggs.
Egg Retrieval: When the eggs are mature, they are retrieved from the woman’s ovary through a minor surgical procedure.
Sperm Collection: The sperm sample will be collected from the partner for fertilizing the egg.
Fertilization: In this step, the retrieved eggs and sperm are combined in the laboratory using IVF or intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) under specific conditions.
Embryo Culturing: Fertilized eggs, now called embryos, are cultured in the lab for a few days to reach the desired stage of development.
Biopsy: When the embryo reaches the fifth or sixth day, it is called a blastocyst. In this stage, a few cells are removed from each embryo.
Genetic Testing: These cells removed from the embryo are analyzed for chromosomal abnormalities using Preimplantation Genetic Screening.
Embryo Selection and Transfer: Based on the screening, embryos free from chromosomal abnormalities are selected, and one or more healthy embryos are transferred into the mother’s uterus.
Luteal Phase Support: Medications like progesterone are administered to the mother to support the uterine lining and embryo implantation.
Pregnancy Test: A beta HCG blood test is done to check for pregnancy after 10-14 days of embryo transfer.
Pregnancy Monitoring: Regular pregnancy monitoring through ultrasounds and medical appointments begins if the test is positive.
Embryo Freezing (Optional): Any extra viable embryos can be frozen for future use. This helps the infertile couple to have more children later.
