Single Women And Unmarried Oocyte Preservation

Unlike olden days, in the modern era, women are empowered. They are able to make decisions that reflect their independence and objectives, whether it’s to focus on education, advance in their career, choose their partner or decide to time pregnancy. But, it is a known fact that women’s fertility (the quantity and quality of eggs) decreases as age increases! So, what is a solution to this age-related fertility concern?

Here is an innovative solution that enables women to temporarily pause their biological clock and preserve fertility until the right moment arises- the Egg Freezing method! It is also called the Oocyte Preservation method.

In this article, we will learn more about the concept of egg freezing, its procedure, and the advantages it provides.

Why Single Women Choose Oocyte Preservation?

Oocyte preservation enables women to decide when they are ready to pursue motherhood based on their situations and life goals. Some of the major reasons why single women may consider oocyte preservation are:

Career: Many single women want to focus on their profession and become successful before entering into motherhood. Oocyte preservation helps them attain their career goals by offering flexibility in family planning.

Personal Goals: Some single women have dreams or goals they want to achieve before conceiving, such as exploring more places, doing higher studies, etc. Oocyte preservation helps them achieve these goals without compromising their fertile age.

Health Issues: Some women face health issues or need treatment for conditions like cancer, which reduces their chances of becoming pregnant. Egg freezing is a great option to preserve their fertility and use the frozen eggs to have kids.

Partner compatibility: Finding the right partner is a long process for many women these days. Oocyte preservation allows women to wait to decide on their ideal partner without compromising on their reproductive age.

Steps in Oocyte Preservation:

  • Consultation: A fertility specialist will conduct a thorough understanding of the fertility problem and review the individual’s medical history. Doctors will discuss the procedure and its benefits, and address any concerns you have.
  • Ovarian stimulation: Hormonal injections and medications will be administered for over 10-14 days to stimulate the ovary to produce multiple eggs.
  • Follicle Monitoring: The eggs are developed inside fluid-filled sacs called follicles. These follicles will be regularly monitored using blood tests and ultrasound scans.
  • Egg Retrieval: When the follicles reach the appropriate size, the eggs are retrieved from them using a minor surgical procedure. This step is done under general anesthesia.
  • Egg Freezing: Healthy, mature eggs are then frozen in very low temperatures. This process is also called vitrification and preserves the integrity of the egg.

These eggs will be preserved in the liquid nitrogen tanks for a long time until the woman is ready for motherhood. When it is time to use them, these eggs are thawed and fertilized via IVF.

How successful is Oocyte preservation?

The success rate of egg freezing varies depending on a combination of various parameters, such as:

  1. Women’s age at the time of egg retrieval and freezing. Generally, younger women have a higher success rate.
  2. The number of oocytes preserved. The more eggs are preserved, the more chances of successful fertilization.
  3. Quality of preserved eggs. High-quality eggs from young women are more likely to have a successful rate.
  4. Other reproductive health conditions of women also affect the success of preservation.  Women with conditions like cancer, PCOD, endometriosis, and low AMH might face challenges in conceiving naturally. They might have a lower success rate.

Risks associated with Oocyte Preservation:

  1. The fertility medication used in oocyte preservation can lead to Ovarian Hyperstimulation syndrome, causing nausea, abdominal discomfort, bloating, etc.
  2. There can be very mild chances of bleeding and infection to surrounding tissues.
  3. For many individuals undergoing fertility treatment, they might face the challenges of depression, stress, and anxiety.
  4. Generally, oocyte preservation is expensive because of the hormonal medications used and the long-term storage of frozen eggs.
